I am reminded of a German mental patient in the late 19th century who said that his works will be interpreted wrong (mainly after his death?). After which they were used by the Nazis according to their interpretation.

So whatever David Fincher (one of those "Doing It For The Art" types, from what I know) and co. intended, of course the film was gonna get interpreted in the way it has been by the Reddit Generation.

I guess other examples of this kind of "<ContentCreators> the message we try to convey in this film is that "don't do it, yo" <InternetTrash> this shall be the foundation of our Redditmanarchyhatreonwhitepowerreich!" cases would be siding with the bad guys in that recent Mad Max film and joining the Legionnaires or whatever in Fallout: New Vegas.

Man, doing those lists sucks. I forgot so many good movies, like Memento and Fight Club (although I didn't like it as much as most people).

I would put Groundhog Day up there simply because you can watch it so often.

I tried to look at Netflix to get inspired for more great movies. But somehow Netflix sucks. At least in Germany.

I can't even think

... in terms of "what movies do I actually like" anymore, so I'm gonna change my previous Top 10 lists from The Room or whatever to: Highlander 2.

which version?
2018-10-11, 1:24 AM #211
Speaking of Christopher Lambert, if you haven’t seen Beowulf (1999) you really should. The weapon design is beyond words.

The worst one, which turns the whole thing into Dragon Ball Z.

"Hey Immortal Guy, we're actually Saiyans from the planet Vegeta!" etc.

There were two versions like that, worst one is probably the cut that was edited by an insurance company (the US theatrical version)
2018-10-11, 3:35 AM #214
Figures.

Also reminds me of the theatrical cuts of Blade Runner (with narrations and all), which I've never seen (and have no interest in seeing). Same with The Matrix sequels. And The Last Jedi (with the special FGR footnote, of course).

And on this episode of "terrible defenses of The Last Jedi": Rey is a good character because she has no purpose. Next week we find out why dialogue and development are unnecessary in a blockbuster action film!
2018-10-11, 6:56 AM #216
Tbh, though, Rey does have a purpose, but the purpose is meta to the narrative: it's because it's a Star Wars film, so it must have some person with a blue/green lightsaber to fight the guy with the red lightsaber. So Rey's "struggle to fit into the plot" is exactly on par with the writers struggling to fit her into the plot. There's no good reason for any of what's happening to be happening. It's just "oh, we gotta do the Star Wars thing," and then they realized 2017 Star Wars is creatively bankrupt unless you change the formula, but they will never change the formula.

Anyone else think Vanilla Sky was great? That was before Tom Cruise went crazy.

He might be quite batty, but I thought he was excellent in the latest Mission Impossible.

The villains and conflict were uninteresting and the progression of the hero was blah. The city-twisting special-effects were meh. It all just felt so random. Like there was no "system" of magic, it was just whatever you wanted. My son liked it, though. I'd rather watch more Thor.

I can't find the scene from Disenchantment, so I'll have to do with a similar joke from the Simpsons instead:

Has anyone here seen The People vs. George Lucas?

Is it worth watching?
2018-10-11, 11:10 PM #226
According to TVTropes' entry on Mark Hamill:

"He was almost tricked into appearing in the documentary The People Vs. George Lucas, but he quickly realized, even before the title was finalized, that it had an anti-Lucas vibe to it, and refused to take any part in it."

From that note alone, I think the name of the documentary should probably have been "Nerd Virgin Rage: Wah Wah Wah" instead.

Yeah but virgin nerd rage is really funny.

Well, in that case.

Reminds me of a video clip where some fat kid states "There are people who like Sonic for real reasons" and I didn't - and still don't - want to know why a video with a statement like that even had to be made. No, just no. Goddamn Internet!

Too bad. It's because there are a lot of people who like Sonic for furry reasons.
2018-10-12, 5:55 AM #231
I have a feeling that the kid's real reason probably was a furry reason all along.

This also reminds of the Comics Curmudgeon guy who took down some piece of Slylock Fox naughty art because the author of the Slylock Fox comics politely asked him to.

It sounds like an interesting idea for a movie: who takes priority, the culture that's changed by IP, or the "owner" of that IP? It's interesting sociologically, philosophically, economically, and even legally - and urgently so. I'm not convinced Star Wars will prove more culturally significant than Paw Patrol, so I'd guess at least part of the boredom comes from the relative insignificance of its subject.

Yeah, I was definitely curious to hear the argument, but the docu had none.. it was just a bunch of grown men complaining.
