Dan cool stuff, definitely agree about the textures.

JM that is insane. Really cool archi.

Brian I like it a lot. Reminds me of Drazen Isle but cooler archi.

Brian, the architecture is spot on, but the textures just look too rough for my taste :S. It's annoying to look at for me
2009-12-08, 11:43 AM #563
Thanks, I agree. I don't think I'm going to be able to do anything about it, though.
2009-12-08, 12:36 PM #564
You could reduce the contrast and levels on the textures so they aren't so polarizing.

How's that?
2009-12-08, 2:23 PM #566
Nevermind, I tried it in Photoshop and it didn't look as good as I thought it would.

It would also help if you had mipmaps. And used 16-bit textures.

2009-12-08, 2:47 PM #567
I increased the mipmap distance -- the textures flipping in/out make it look awful to me. I'm not going to retexture the whole level with 16 bit textures. *shrug*
2009-12-08, 7:02 PM #568
Once it's lit it will be fine. You could have the best arch in the world but without good lighting it'll look naff, and it's the same with some textures too. So don't worry about it and keep up the good work :)

great looking texture stiching and archi, kind of reminds me of Canyon oasis with those pools. Goits right with proper lights and shadows I bet this thing would look awesome as hell. It looks like to me that some of those textures are 16-bit.

It amazes me how you people always find something negative.

Dude, I wasn't being negative, I was making a joke. I think your work rules, as always.

I thought it was clever. Almost as clever as the amazing archi. That's some pretty sick stuff JM.

While the architecture is definately awesome... how will those jagged sides serve any purpose, except "Oh hey, jaggy!" when someone falls over the edge? Do you intend to add more areas and pathways around this mighty fine pillar of architecture?

If I was a betting man, I'd say he'll make an island as good as he feels he can, then copy and paste it five times so the player can jump from island to island. If they then moved around too....

But you know, no pressure :P

Well, seeing as one of the pillars on the far side is down lower than the others, and there appears to be a ramp going down, yes, I bet he's planning something extra.

It amazes me that you think they wouldn't or shouldn't, and even more that you thought of Brian's joke as such.

But it does look very nice :)

Those little dots are why lightmaps suck.

The dots on the rocks? I probably wouldn't even have noticed them if you hadn't said anything. That ramp is pretty sweet though. Does it do anywhere in particular other than the bottom of the floating island? Can you go inside at the bottom?

JM, you are using q3map2, right?

So why are the shadows horribly blocky?

ydnar, the guy who wrote it, was always really approachable about Q3Map2. You might e-mail him or find him on IRC (channels for gtkradiant/q3map2 if they are still around), and ask him if he knows what's wrong. As you certainly know there are a lot of corner cases and complexities when dealing with complex maps and geometry. If there's a way to fix it he would probably know.

Uh. Because that's the default lightmap resolution, I only have a single light source, and I didn't want to wait hours for the radiosity pass?
2009-12-11, 6:05 AM #589
While the architecture is without doubt amazing, I'm still not a fan of the backdrop. That line along the purple "sky" is rather distracting. The sky itself is rather plain and cartoony, a stark contrast to the great architecture.

Oh well in that case a "final compile" run overnight with the "prettiest" settings would do the job, yes? No problem then, right?

Not quite. There's no specific 'prettiest' settings, the settings need to be tweaked for each individual map. But, vertex lighting over the rocks looks much better than the lightmaps, and scaling the lightmaps helps. There's actually two different scales visible in this shot.

I think you need to increase ambient light by quite a bit.

The light compiler doesn't do those with sunlights.
