Steam Release Celebration Level Contest Mega Thread
2009-10-28, 7:51 PM #281
Looks amazing, Goit!

I'm attempting to finish my level for the previous single player contest, The Darkness Jaded.

Here's some water machinery thing, with a leaky seal. The bubbling effect is pretty awesome in game.

So I've begun work on my entry for the contest. It's going to be a MotS Singleplayer Level. Here are some screenies of my progress (I know there's no lighting.. that will be the very last thing I do).

cheers guys.

MysteriousSith, lighting is probably the most important thing. You could create the best architexture in the world but without good lighting it would look pants. I suggest doing lighting as you go along :)

If you don't like doing it, then here's a suggestion - use Chris Swans fog cog (in the cogs section) to create the impression of a blizzard outside in the snow. Maybe that and a wind sound in the sectors. Emon created a great rain cog you can find on jkhub, all them mixed and it would look great. Just a little suggestion. Like what you've done though matey. I like your cliffs!

Good lookin' stuff Sith and Goit.

Oh there will be lighting... and it will look decent.. just havent got around to it yet. But those are some good ideas Goit. I was already planning to do the snow thing.. but fog sounds like an awesome idea too!

Nice to see someone else using Sevristh's textures as well :)

Not a fan of the snow and snowy rock textures, but otherwise it looks wonderful.

That's a nice hole, Emon.

Geez. I can't believe I didn't see this thread. Awesome stuff, everyone.

This makes me want to open up ZED and round off some of my old unfinished projects.

But I'm such a slow editor.

I have this MotS level that I really should release.

Are you like Goit and didn't know about snap to grid and automatic texture stitching? :P

those snow rock textures are the best i have :/
however.. i have some good stone/rock textures if any one thinks they'd be good at adding snow/ice to them.

Haha, no... I felt really bad for him reading that.

What's snap to grid?
2009-10-29, 2:31 PM #296
I thought "snap to grid" was the default in JED (which is why I've never made anything without it).

That will center/snap the grid to the selected vertice of your sector/surface/thing.

No, that's snap grid to whatever. Snap to grid snaps things to the grid.
2009-10-29, 6:39 PM #299
How do you snap things to the grid? Doesn't it just always do that? Or are you saying there's a keyboard shortcut or something that will snap your selected thing to the grid? Wherever the grid may be? That sounds dangerous.
2009-10-29, 7:13 PM #300
You talking about in Map Settings, "snap every"

Default is like .2, I prefer .01
"Nulla tenaci invia est via"
2009-10-29, 7:31 PM #301
I like snap at .05, dot at .1, lines at .5.
2009-10-29, 7:39 PM #302
My attempt to take the spotlight away from me editing for ten years, and not knowing about automatic stitching... I hope you guys like pushing crates, because I like nothing more.

Ditto, except I leave lines at every 1. Sometimes I change the snap depending on what i'm doing, 1 for outlining HUGE areas in new maps, .1 for larger archi, .05 for average, and .025 is handy for smaller stuff.

WTF is automatic stitching? I usually use ; to select, and ' to stitch. Is there a better way?

sometimes i go as low as .00625 D:
2009-10-29, 10:09 PM #305
I alternate between 0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.0125, and 0.00625. Sometimes I go up to to 1 or 2 if I'm working with skybox sectors. Depends on how much detail I need/how zoomed I am.

I was wondering if you guys could change the date to be the end of December, that way I could work on a level over Christmas break on my home PC.

Shift S snaps the grid to whatever you have selected. This is the genius of Jed -- you can move the grid around wherever you want it, at whatever angle.

Honestly I have been thinking the same thing. The levels are due virtually the same day my semester ends - just in time to have *nothing* to do. That's been the #1 thing preventing me from starting an entry, school.

Yeah, I know. I just assumed that was what Emon meant. I always call that function 'Snap to Grid' too, even though technically you're snapping the grid to the object.

It might be on JKhub. However, I need to tweak it a bit for my own level. After that, you're welcome to use it. Should do snow just fine, too, just need a different template. You could pretty easily make the have a whispy, windy effect with a class COG.

That's what I was thinking. I actually hated the fact that z64 gave you those troughs to guide your blocks. Wtf like I can't figure out where to put them? It wasn't a puzzle, it was busy-work.
2009-10-30, 2:41 PM #316
Same here Dash_rendar, you wanna just make out own level pack? haha, for real though, could someone consider that change being made possibly?
