Anyone with an ATI X1k series card should check this out it was released today and should mean you can get HDR+AA with ATI cards, should make Oblivion even more eye-candy.
People of our generation should not be subjected to mornings.

Reson # 245 why the X1800XT > the 7900GT.
2006-04-07, 3:57 AM #724
Well thats kinda wrong, because the 7900GT beats the x1800xt like a smelly dead horse pieces on jeans. AA doesn't justify that. The x1900xt, on the other hand matches it up nicely, though. :em321:

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_high-end_performance/default.asp

according to the above review the X1900xt & xtx beats anything nvidia has to offer in 90% of the outdoor tests, also the x1800xtx beats the 7900gtx in quite a few areas with high foliage and at higher resolutions.

the x1800xtx beats the 7900gt in every outdoor test

However when you get indoors nvidia catches up and is almost on par with the x1900xt/x but at that point you are looking at 60fps+ for most cards anyway.

From what I've been reading on other forums it's generally agreed that ATI has the upper hand in Oblivion.

there is also a review at Bit-Tech that shows the x1900xtx as currently the best card to play oblivion.

Not that it matters all that much to me as I have a 6800gt but interesting none the less.

On the other hand, I realized its my CPU causing any slow downs in this game. My GPU runs great with everything on, 8x AF, 6x AA, at 1600x1200. Why I'm saying this? Framerate doesn't alter if I change to 1280x1024, or if I turn AA or AF off. I'm going to do a lot of play testing over the weekend to see if I can eliminate most of the problems.

But god the game looks so fantastic with AA and HDR.

Note : Do NOT have adaptive antialiasing on, that slaughters framerate outdoors.

Not in any benchmarks I've seen. *Waits for a Doom 3 benchmark to be posted*

Reason* :p.

And the X1800/1900XT may be better, but when you start seeing games rely more heavily on SM3.0, the incomplete versions pasted onto ATi's line should start to show their age, while nVidia will still keep going strong. Not only that, but Crossfire chipsets are still buggy, and not worth your money, and SLi now accepts different cards of the same line for SLi, so it's basically on par with Crossfire in that respect.

BAH! STOP TALKING ABOUT STUPID STUFF! I DEMAND MORE OBLIVION STORIES.

The stupid freaking blind moth monk patron ate 100 some gold in bribes just to NOT show me where the stone was. I figured he'd walk me through so I didn't have to fight all of the blind moth wariors. Sometimes the AI sucks.

Question: What if you've already beat up something from a quest? Do you simply have to NOT do the quest? I mean, I'll cheat if I screwed something up, but like, I've killed the people on that pirate ship, and I've done a few other things that people tell me are already quests in other questlines. I don't want to have to OVERLY cheat by respawning AI or something like that.

I don't think so.

The captain wasn't on that ship for me, untill I joined and got the mission from the dark brotherhood.

Also, stay a night on the bloated float if you haven't aready.

I was all WTF.

That sword the lady had at the end was pretty pimp though.
2006-04-07, 1:49 PM #736
Yeah, I already did that one. It was VERY cool. I had let her live in a previous one, but killed her in this one, and I must say: FAR more worth it to kill her. Her sword is perfectalicious.

Anyone give me more solid evidence on the whole ruining quests thing?

On that note, how the hell do you recharge your weapons?

You can't ruin quests because you can't kill the NPCs that are important to the quests. Whenever a crown appears when you target them, that means they are such an NPC that cannot die. I would say about 1/3 of all NPCs are this way.

I'm pretty sure key npcs don't spawn until the quest is activated. Like the Odill boys, Ship captain, etc.

There are certain mages that recharge weapons.

Other than that, you need to cast soul trap on something just before you kill it to fill an empty soul gem.

You need like 25 mysticism to use soul trap, though. :(

You can also use an ayekalid (sp) stone to recharge your weapons.

But they are very rare and they recharge ALLL the weapons in your inv, so it's best to wait until you have a lot of drained enchantments before using.

Yeah.

You can find atleast one in nearly any Aeylid ruin.

The most I've found on one trip was 6.
2006-04-07, 4:11 PM #744
Go to the ruins near the sewers. There's plenty of stones in there, because a group of bandits gathered them all.

I managed to get it just by scaring the crap out of her. Told her that I killed everyone, and managed to guess the answers to everything after that. She freaked out, gave me her sword, and surrendered.

Damn nice sword, though.
Moo.

It's that inn on the boat by the Imperial City waterfront. Well, it's the boat itself, actually. But there is an inn.

I did that for my first character. You get a message that says you can never join the Dark Brotherhood.

You found 6 varla stones? The common kind (they have a name that starts with a w) just recharges your magicka. I've only ever found one varla, in the ruins by the sewer exit.
2006-04-07, 7:48 PM #752
Welkynd, and yes, that's what they must be talking about.

The most Varla Stones I've found in a single ruin is 3.
2006-04-07, 8:38 PM #753
What do the Varla Stones do?

Yeah, I found six.

I forget where.

I just got done finding the research that the guy lost in the cave. At first it was easy, just sneaking along and picking off imps with my bow.

And then all of the sudden there were big green evil trolls. From that point on, I had to just dart as fast as I could through the cave, grab the research papers, and run like heck until finally I made it out of the cave.
One troll chased me into the inn, where the Imperial soldier and innkeeper helped me kill it.

I don't suppose anyone else has done this little quest? Or, actually been able to stand and fight the trolls?
They were way more than I could handle.
2006-04-07, 11:37 PM #757
I love gathering a ton of monsters and dragging them all the way to Imperial City, to see if they can slay the monsters :D
2006-04-08, 3:10 AM #758
Standard trolls are very easy enemies, even if you're poor at melee combat like a thief/assassin usually is. Painted Trolls are nasty though.

You have to get your block and your armor skill up.

Make sure you're using the armor that is your character's major skill. You'll level it faster.
