Can you really steal those resources though. Maybe I'm not entirely sure which ones you're talking about. Surely anything that is directly based on Lucasfil, err, Disney content they can't own to begin with. I imagine you're also talking about things like the textures and stuff that make the level feel so good so perhaps those are the sorts of assets you're referring to. Sorry, never really did much with game editing past WDFUSE.

Another game I've been messing around with for the past couple days is The Incredible Hulk PC version. I found it cheap and complete in a Goodwill a year or so back so I picked it up. It's one of those games that feels exactly like a console game especially when played with a controller. The game kind of reminds me of Spider-Man 2 for the original XBox but not nearly that good. That reminds me, I got to the final boss fight in that game but never did defeat Dr. Octopus. Anyway, it works (with a DPI change) fairly well on my PC but has some issues. I decided to look it up.

The PC version of The Incredible Hulk is awful. What little fun that could be had in the other versions of this game has been destroyed here, only to be replaced with glitchy graphics that won't even let you see the city and a desolate city that somehow makes destruction boring. It's bewildering that the developers ported the inferior PS2 and Wii versions instead of the far more satisfying PS3 and X360 versions. Stay far away from this game.

So, yeah, uninstalling this turd and back to the shelf, if not Salvation Army, it goes!

Speaking of Dark Forces, checking to see if DF-21 is still around and I found this actually recent link.

Yeah, I meant those. The impression I got from some UE4 related article years ago was that you can siphon any game's 3D models and textures from the GPU memory regardless of how well and "securely" they've been compiled in the game files.

So I wouldn't be surprised if someone has done exactly that with the UE4 Mos Eisley tech demo assets. And is withholding their release of the "best SW FPS game since Republic Commando".

Why would they need to do that, or care to do that, or whatever? Did I miss something?

Well, they are pretty good assets. https://forums.massassi.net/vb3/showthread.php?67790-Mos-Eisley-UE4-Free-Tech-Demo&highlight=

Man, did I get a bunch of useless stuff back in the day (and that's not even including the 2-3 models I got from TurboSquid)

Also, hot damn, 550 downloads to go until DXN has reached 50k https://www.moddb.com/mods/nihilum/downloads/dxn-deusexnihilum

Sure, 29,714 of those downloads were downloaded by a spambot on the same day in January 2014 (not to mention that most of the non-29,714 downloads are by spambots anyway), but that's when I'll get rid of the "well u no diz spambot downlooded it many times lol" disclaimers and just go with "this mod has been downloaded 50k times wow anyway how is your sex life".

Woo.

Apparently Jedi Outcast is being ported to the Switch. Visually, the game looks dated as hell in 2019.

I'm guessing Aspyr owns the port.

On a slightly game editing related note, I do like photos like this from real places: https://opacity.us/image10298_pathology.htm

... especially in the sense that if I had put something like that (ventilation?) part of the wall on the top left going through a morgue drawer or a door or something, people'd have made hi-la-ri-ous and helpful comments like "HA! WAY TO MAKE UNSENSICAL ARCHI, HACKLAMERR! ZING!".

Boh!

I would like to think something like Google Maps street view is a godsend these days for level designers. The amount of detail in game environments in recent titles, that often gets so overlooked, blows my mind. 10+ years ago, it would be unreal.

Buoyed by shareholder confidence after Famous Investor's letter, GameStop closed today at $5.09 - a meteoric rise from their low of $3.15 only a couple of weeks ago. Not so fast, GameStop bea---

Quote:
GameStop’s second quarter total global sales decreased 14.3% (13.1% in constant currency) to $1.3 billion, resulting in a consolidated comparable store sales decrease of 11.6%.

New hardware sales decreased 41.1%, reflective of recent announcements for next generation console launches in 2020.
New software sales decreased 5.3%, with growth in Nintendo Switch software titles more than offset by weaker title launches across other consoles in the quarter compared to last year.
Accessories sales decreased 9.5%.
Pre-owned sales declined 17.5% with declines in hardware and software.
Digital receipts decreased 11.2% to $227.2 million due to weaker title launches in the quarter compared to last year.
Collectibles sales increased 21.2%, with continued strong double-digit growth in both domestic and international stores.

GameStop’s second quarter GAAP net income (loss) was ($415.3) million, or ($4.15) per diluted share, compared to net income (loss) of ($24.9) million, or ($0.24) per diluted share, in the prior-year quarter, which included the Spring Mobile business. Second quarter fiscal 2019 results include asset impairment charges and other items of $400.9 million ($381.6 million net of taxes), or $3.82 per diluted share, primarily related to impairment of goodwill. Second quarter fiscal 2018 results included a non-operating tax charge of $29.6 million, or $0.29 per diluted share.

pbbbbbbbbbbbttttt. Nobody expected them to do well, but their guidance was a 5-10% decline, not a 14% drop. The share price went down almost a dollar in after-hours trading. I assume it would be much worse had they not managed to spin Famous Investor's letter to imply he'd taken a long position in Gamestop?

Oh, and here's the new story in the mainstream media: Per management, GameStop is closing between 180 and 200 stores. Roughly 5% of their US locations. Whoever could have predicted this?? Just based on their layoffs so far, I expect as we get closer to the end of the fiscal year this number is going to go up to 20% or higher. That, too, is rather generously assuming that they aren't planning on laying off another wave of their middle management (you want to retain enough in the short term to tear down their own districts).

Jon, please, it's just "consistent with what we have historically observed towards the end of a hardware cycle", ok?

Also, I never realized that giant Gamestop building in my hometown of Grapevine was actually their HQ. Just figured it was a big distribution center.

GameStop losing money is just consistent with what we have historically observed on Tuesdays, and also every other day of the week.

So I've admitted to getting sucked into the rabbit hole on many dumb software/game things and it happened again tonight. Does anyone remember the Star Wars Screen Entertainment pack from the mid-nineties? I downloaded a copy of it a year or so back (in the rabbit hole of course) but I don't remember actually getting anything done with it.

Well, I think I mentioned earlier that I've kind of been into some FMV games and I remembered a demo disc from way back that came with my first real PC for Silent Steel. I don't remember why I never bought it, maybe too expensive or something but I downloaded it today. It came bundled in a Windows 3.1 Dosbox deal and Windows and the game were less than 1 FPS. Well, a couple years or so back I downloaded a fully functional Windows 3.1 that ran great in DOSBox so I moved the game files over to that and made a batch file for that game specifically and it runs great.

Then I remembered about SWSE so I found that and installed it but then it basically ruined Windows 3.1. It was running out of memory. Rather than troubleshoot what it did I just recopied the Windows folders back into the directory and had to drop in one more file from the installation and the Star Wars screensavers work fine now.

I really had some problems with nostalgia several years back but I got over that but this kind of nostalgia I really enjoy. The mid-nineties was such a great time for LEC and Star Wars games in general. I really want to get back into the XWing and TIE Fighter games someday.

Yes, but there’s a server emulator that has all of the content anybody is likely to care about.

Did anyone manage to create an emulator that runs servers on earlier patches of the game?

Supposedly Seedsow, but other than the name and the fact that it’s trying to emulate AC:DM I know nothing about it.
