Hey, I made that! Jesus Christ, that's embarrassing.

It's not even a proper original mod, but rather a bunch of stuff from a ridiculous amount of different mods that I put together, often resorting to equally ridiculous methods to make it all work. One example is that every time you fire a gun, there's actually some four projectiles being fired at the same time: one for creating the bullethole upon collision with a wall, one for scoring headshots when hitting an enemy, another one for showing sprites/particles when hitting objects and yet another one for showing bullet trails when in slow motion. What's even worse is that it would also fire the four projectiles in MP, so you can imagine how much it would lag. Why didn't I just make that all into a single projectile? Because I had no idea how to do it, as my Cog knowledge basically consisted of taking chunks of code from elsewhere and praying it would work. Of course, I didn't write most of the cogs for those effects except for some (mostly unnecessary (and somewhat annoying)) extras, like the game going slowmo every time you headshot an enemy.

But then again, I was 14 at most when I made that - considering "The Dantooine Choronicles" was made by a 24 year old, I think I was doing quite well. IIRC it got quite some praise by the community at the time and I thought it was quite fun considering the limitations.

Anyway, ever since, I've moved on from taking things from other mods to taking things from other games - this is what JK looks like today

Well, 10 years after you first worked on the mod and 7 years after I first downloaded it, and I was still quite impressed! And yes, I should try your newer projects much faster than I did with the Indy mod.

I like the Matrix-style time stopping feature. It's not very Indy, but it dates it back to the early 2000s in a charming way.

It’s basically Perl, only not specified as formally, and not as good with strings.

As someone with a passing and informal interest in programming language design, it seems slightly funny to call something "basically Perl" when Perl is infamously the most difficult languages to formally define. Usually it's something like, "basically Algol 60" (or even fortran). OTOH calling somebody's language "basically PHP" probably amounts to fighting words.

I got norman's sky and i like it a lot. I'm mostly out of 'mine and sell' intro part of the game and have been making some good cash on stuff I'm finding. _maybe one day I'll leave this planet_

In the interest of responding to this 2017 post I will say this: Goddamned I miss Lucas Arts. EA is the devil incarnate. They don't give two ****s about creating a good "visceral" experience. They wanna sell the same Madden and Fifa games forever. They are garbage, as are the two Battlefront games that came out. (both of which i plated excessively, anyone try the BF2 campaign? its terrible! A call of duty D-bag clone). This topic is all the more relevant in the wake of the BF2 lootbox fiasco. All that can be said for those games are they look good, but that's about where it ends. I've been playing "Classic BF2" on steam since they brought back the servers for multiplayer. SUCH a rewarding experience. Much more than I can say for any game EA made.


La li lu le lo! That's a great thing to hear, and say. I probably go out of my way to say that once a month. Metal Gear is full of fun stuff to say. Shalashaska for instance.

Oh, I don't think that's why they were mad. They were mad because I answered every goddamn question on the COG forum with mediocre, unreadable code, but it "worked" so people used it.

w.r.t. Quake 2 re-engines: I do prefer Q2XP at the moment, it certainly feels more grounded and solid than Berserker, or so to speak (or maybe I should mess with its settings more).

And it effin' lets me use 2560x1440 instead of capping it at 1920x1080!

Stuff like this is super cool.

I love the idea of player behavior shaping the world in MMOs. It seems like something unique to the genre, that the game developers are like divine clock makers, and that once the world has been created, rules of the game could emerge by players agreeing on what the rules are, without them even realizing that they're making the rules. The clearest example of stuff like that is the trading economy that emerges in MMOs, where the value of goods arises through consensus.

Just finished a play through on Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. I've always liked that game. Gabriel Knight 3 seems a little buggy at first so I'm going to mess around with the settings to see what happens. I never got anywhere with that game in the past so it will be interesting to see if it manages to keep my attention this time. I've never played the first one but I have it and the remake installed and I think I'll give them a shot if I finish the third one.
