This is a charming feature?

Late 1800s: Check it out, our island has two cars! That's one more than most islands. Check out how technologically advanced we are!

1950s: Our island is woefully backward. We only have two cars. For instance, Cuba has hundreds... and they all have tailfins.

2010: Check it out, our island has two cars! In a world full of cars, aren't we quaint and rustic? And ecologically conscious!

I'd say yes seeing as cars aren't a necessity. ;)
nope.

Perhaps not in Limeyland, but in the US they're damn near required, except in a large urban environment with ample public transportation (e.g. New York City, Chicago, Portland OR, Seattle, San Francisco). Anyplace else, you're screwed without a car.
2010-06-02, 11:06 AM #9207
Yeah, if you don't live in a city, you absolutely must have a car in the US.

that's not necessarily true. I lived without a car for a good year and a half. Yes, my life was boring as hell, but I survived. I rode a bike to work every morning, and rode home in the afternoon.

Firstly, as stated, the place I was talking about is in Kenya, not England!

It's a small island with no roads (you can get the ambulances down the sea front if needed). Most of the buildings date back to the 18th century, and the alleys between them are only wide enough for people and donkeys to pass each other. This also makes sense as it provides shade during most of the day (it was 29 degrees at 6am when we were there - during the rainy season). Its also a UNESCO world heritage site.

And also - the way that western town planning has been designed around cars, so that it is now virtually impossible to live without one, is really not something to be proud of!

I don't think anyone said it was, they may think it is but it was merely presented as a fact of living outside cities in the US.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Okay, this is me, working hour 29 of my working 31 or 32 hours straight with one 30 minute break. When I say I spent the night at the park to pull this event off, I didn't sleep, I work straight through the night. At this point, I had not showered in 3 days (thank god for that hat!), my contacts were not an option, I have no makeup on, I'm severely dehydrated, I haven't eaten in about 18 hours, I haven't had any sleep, I'm pretty sure that was the closest I'd gotten to sitting in about 20 hours, I'd been working and sweating doing manual labor and actual event management since I was responsible for the entire goings on the day of the event.

Everyone in the picture except for two people (both of the girls in the dresses) have had similar schedules)

I think the average commute mileage is around 16 miles (read that on ABC a while ago). That is most definitely not a fun bike ride. Now factor in different weather conditions in all the states. Not sure that people will be biking when it's -30F with windchill outside. I think you are probably in quite the minority.

Or ****ing 98F, like it was today. And it's not even August yet! In August, it reaches, regularly, 105F+.

Thank FSM for air conditioning. At work, I set my thermostat to 69 (haha).

I cycled around 16 miles yesterday (looked it up because it felt like I'd done quite a lot). Included a fair bit of rain and many, many hills. I felt great when I got home though, and it's so much fun zooming past all the cars sitting in traffic...

Wolfy (Josh) and 'dalf (Brandon) came up from San Diego and visited me (Steven) yesterday. We went to The Hat (pastrami) and then went to Bass Pro Shop (redneck) to go shooting (badass).

Here's Wolfy firing my 1911 (.45 auto). He did pretty well for being his first time (virgin).

PS, you can see some of my filmography if you look close enough on youtube and facebook.

Oh, I also get a continuing John Lennon accusation. Several spooky types have declared that I am in fact Mr. Lennon reincarnated. I think it had more to do with my nose, glasses, and their lack of imagination than me sharing any sort of Massassi's soul with the guy.

I once had a guy touch my hair in a bar and tell me I had a John Lennon thing going on. And then he told me he was hitting on me, and stared at me for a long time even though I made it clear I was not interested.
He was later seen being kicked out of the bar, and I found out he had told a friend of the bouncer that the guy slept with his girlfriend.

Also, it is very important that you watch this film about Adrien Brody.
