Trying to discover why I would want to put a game on my work machine. Even more so, why I would ever play a military sim.

Spook don't you want to play a sim of something you've done the real version of a bunch of times?

Thats one sexy laptop Spook, but I hate the idea of trying to put that much power in a laptop. Unless you seriously need to be portable to anywhere, I'd wager it would cost less and you would get better performance building 2 desktops (a HomePC and WorkPC) and then just carrying a storage device between them. Also less risk of theft/damage.

I'm turned off by it on so many levels Antony. So many levels.

It's my work machine and I don't want games ****ing it all up! Plus I don't play video games.

triscuit, I agree with you, but moving into freelance motion picture work (going mostly in the direction of docu/commercial for paying work, narrative work is my primary artistic ambition, but I don't really want to try and eek out a living photographing people's poorly written Wes Anderson ripoffs) I really value the ability to have a powerful machine with me while I'm shooting to ingest files and view 'dailies' even when I am unable to return to wherever I'm living that night. I feel like it's a fair compromise for the way my career looks to be for what will be the life span of this machine.

I only mentioned it because the system requirements are insane and it does a lot of hard drive streaming. It totally skipped my mind that you were a veteran.

You don't need a top of the line phone. Even a $100 phone would run circles around what you picked up. That's why I am trying to stress it's a poor choice. My friend made a similar mistake, and he's been hating his decision ever since (after about a week of using it, that is).

Edit: Keep in mind you are under contract to keep said phone for two whole years as well. It was slow as hell when it came out. It's REALLY slow now. Imagine what it'll be like in two years. This is the equivalent of buying not just a celeron CPU, but an OLD celeron CPU, and being required to use it for 2 more years, just because you think you're saving $100. In reality, you'll probably end up not using it the phone to its fullest potential because it'll steadily grow more out of date and you'll get tired of it bogging down. It already runs on an ancient version of Android, and it's going to see even less compatibility over the coming years.

The phone will steadily decline in performance as well as you add more stuff on it. The incredibly limited internal memory also ensures you won't be doing much with it.

So, I loaded Engadget's main site on my phone on Wi-Fi, was pretty fast actually. Then DLed some game app for my kid (Talking Ben I think it's called), about 18 megs, downloaded in about 30 secs installed fully 30 secs later. Took less than a minute to DL Angry Birds, about same time to install... More internal memory'd be nice, sure, but so far I'm pretty happy with it. Might buy an extended battery for it, too (http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/mugen-power-1300mah-extended-battery-for-sony-ericsson-xperia-x8.html), actually have a friend who works for these Mugen Power guys, apparently they make quality stuff. Though not sure if 8% is worth $50.00...

Download speed isn't the problem, that's why I asked you to time loading Engadget's website.
2012-02-06, 11:52 AM #2251
Btw, it automatically redirects to m.engadget.com when I go to the site, not sure if there's a way to stop it from doing that. I'm using the default browser so far, but might DL something better soon, will try with that. Will have to setup walrus at home first, though. :)

EDIT: Setup walrus. Installed Skyfire. Full site loads in a few seconds. No issues still.

You click the Desktop link at the bottom of the page. Also, Skyfire is a terrible browser. Dolphin Browser HD is the usual choice if you have to use a third party browser.

Your load times are likely double that of even an old phone right now. Just FYI.

An old guy at this church I went to as a kid talked to me once about being an extra in Tora! Tora! Tora! He said they were paid either hourly or per jump when jumping off ships pretending to die, so he and his buddies just decided to stay and do it all day. He claimed to have died like 20 times in the movie.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Well besides the ash catcher I bought for my water pipe, I got some new PC speakers and an audio interface/mixer for just messing around recording guitar. All for under $200 shipped.

Wait, they seriously put Clerks on Bluray?

For christ sake, it was already beyond improvable when it was on DVD!

the fact that the bluray improves on the DVD only in the area of fewer compression artifacts is why i put off buying it for so long... the fact that my DVD is the old non anamorphic version with fewer bonus features is the only reason i went ahead and bought it

Does it have all of the special features like Clerks X does? If not, I'd have just bought that instead. The documentary about the making of Clerks is better than the actual film, as is generally the case with Kevin Smith movies.
