well that settles it, i just bought an xbox
2020-05-29, 6:59 PM #3602
So what made you buy an Xbox? My first experience with Xbox was when my wife bought me one for Christmas one year. I was actually more interested in the Gamecube due to exclusive Star Wars games. I ended up buying one later and that's a whole 'nother story. Anyway, I picked up the 360 when they released the Elite. I jumped over to PS when I got a good deal on PS4 because it seemed it was a bit better than the one and I hadn't yet been able to play PS exclusives. I suck at PS controls though so later, when the S was a good deal and a much better bluray solution, I picked up the Xbox One S. Not doing the X though. Or the PS4 Pro. Although I did see some good X prices recently.

Due to the fact that the 360 was so ubiquitous, I can't actually sell my console even for something like 20 € - especially since it has a mere 20 GB HDD. And since I've got no particular interest in keeping it anymore, I'm gonna have to throw it in a machine disposal bin at some point.

Was hoping I could at least keep the controller, but due to leaving the batteries in the controller for like 10 years, they had leaked a bit and seemingly corroded some internal parts so I can't even get the controller to turn on - could have gotten one of those wireless peripherals for it and used it with my PC. Boh!

As for buying things, yesterday I finally managed to fulfill a random thing I thought about in a dream about a year ago and got this:

Unlike in the box of JK+MotS cases when I had to throw the boxes away right after buying the games to not piss my father off (long story), I actually never even got the box for SotE in the first place because I ordered the game from some mail-order thing, and obviously to save up in expenses they just shipped me the jewel case in the mail.

Granted that the EU English box only seems to have the jewel case and a registration card inside (latter of which I don't really care for since I'm not that much of a completionist), but... still.

I was able to resist the nostalgia urge yesterday and did not buy a Coleco Adam on eBay. It went for a good price but the seller did not specifically mention it working when connected to a screen and there's also the fact that I wouldn't actually ever really use it. I would probably spend a bunch of time setting it up, seeing if it works, hopefully it would and then I'd play around with it for a bit feeling guilty about spending the money and the time on it when I have tons of other things to do and then I'd box it until who knows when.

Yeah, as much as I'd want to buy a bunch of old computers that I've never used in the first place (ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amiga etc.), the upkeep of such machines (in addition to getting them to work) is really something for enthusiasts instead of asset flippers like me (well, at the moment). So now I'm focusing on checking out if my dad's surviving old computers work (C64, Sinclair QL, possibly some Yamaha one from 1985 or sth) and if there's data to be recovered (Macintosh Plus, SE/30).

Instead, I should probably buy some cable runways or sth instead of having this jumbled mess under my desk

Although I don't recall if it was a computer desk or am entertainment center but I do remember once organizing and trying a bunch of cables and then realizing what a bad idea that was the first time I needed to move something. My entertainment rack now I can simply turn if I ever need to get at something.

I have been thinking about picking up that C64 replica thing though. Not sure if it's released yet.

IIRC SotE "shares" the same engine as Dark Forces in the same way HL1's engine is "based on" Quake 1.

I thought it would be easier to get a definitive answer on what engine was used in the game but that doesn't seem to be the case. First I looked in The Secrets of Star Wars the Shadows of the Empire which doesn't provide much in the way of those details. Wikipedia sent me to this article. Some Dark Forces tools were used in the design of the game but as far as the engine itself the most conclusive information I have found so far is this quote: "We were able to include a very wide variety of game play styles in Shadows. In retrospect, this meant that we couldn’t tune each type of game play as much as we would have liked. It also meant an almost Herculean programming task in trying to write and debug what amounted to five different game engines."

Oh, and nice score by the way. I'm continuously annoyed that Disney threw out Shadows. It was a pretty big, well thought out, multimedia story. I never picked up the boxed PC version of the game. I actually rented an N64 to play Shadows and then later picked it up loose used after my wife bought me one. Of course it's the boxed Star Wars Racer version! Anyway, apparently Shadows CD is very difficult to get running but fortunately there's GOG. I found the PC controls awkward though. Here is an archive of the multimedia files that are on the music CD. I always had a terrible time finding a computer with a CD-ROM that could access these so when I finally did I copied them from the disc. I don't believe it can be run from a 64-bit version of Windows. I open the program in Windows 3.1 running in DOSBox but it should run fine in other Windows such as 95, etc.

I've occasionally looked for a loose disc Eternal Darkness because mine was damaged, so I took it somewhere to clean which then rendered it unplayable. I did download it and played it in dolphin but damn, I want a playable disc.

Yeah, when I made digital backups of (most of) my physical discs last year, I was quite annoyed to discover that the Anachronox discs were unreadable (on my current machines, at least). Sure, I've got the game on GOG.com as well, but still.

And speaking of which, it's time for new photos of my collection of big game boxes (including DX:IW and C&C First Decade as semi-exceptions). Of course, out of all of those only Worms Armageddon, Rebellion...

... and Rogue Squadron were ones that I actually got (and were able to keep) at the time, but still.

Not recent but the Vizio 50" screen I bought failed on me after 6 months... Screen suddenly dimmed and flickered and now won't turn. I "power cycled" it too.

Anyone else have a Vizio? Sucks but I guess its better to fail under 1 year...

I caved and bought an Oculus Quest for relatively cheap on ebay. I hope I'm not falling for any scam, the attached picture is the one used in the auction. But so far everything seems to be legit. And I can always get my money back.

I thought I'd share a few toys that I decided to splurge on recently. I'm a sucker for Samurai themed heroes even though I will rarely actually make the purchase.

This version of Wolverine, or Patch as he was known when his monthly series started in '88 is nostalgic to me because of the fact that it is based on his first monthly series. That is also the comic I purchased in '88, when I was a senior in high school. Having said all of that, it's not the best looking figure.

And I'm also a sucker for Trans Ams and Smokey and the Bandit so when I happened across this I had to have it.

started out as a $50 facebook find... shells, 2 cymbal stands, some cymbals, throne, snare stand... needed floor tom legs, bass drum pedal, rack tom arms, some tension rods which was a hair over $100 and that was with the cheapest everything i could find

have since spent $[not gonna do this math today] on more/better cymbals and added a couple (cheap) stands

i just need to pick/clear a good spot to keep them set up, drums take up a lot of space even when stacked in a corner
