she finally quit after i spent a few minutes repeating, "i would give up my guns in a heartbeat if asked to for a well thought out program to allow for a safer society; until then they are a hobby that i engage with once a year when i visit my parents"
I had a blog. It sucked.

Wait I thought you got married within the last year or two

Edit: I suppose being married doesn't preclude also seeing a girl, but that's not cool

Edit 2: I might be thinking of someone else
2017-11-09, 12:00 PM #5325
that was easily the largest mistake (e- to clarify, the mistake was the marriage, i never saw anyone else while with her, which is more than i could say of her) that i have made so far in life and we are now divorced, about two years after getting married. life is better when you're not being threatened every night, and she will hopefully realize that i am not the cause of her issues and seek help on her own now that i'm not around for her to blame.

It gets worse if you tell them you eat game meat.

It's only not cool if you don't have consent from your wife!

zloc did you show her the kinds of ranges you do when you visit your parents like the one below?

If it's any consolation, your second marriage is statistically unlikely to be successful, but Korko and FGR are happily married and living together in a charming bungalow in the small town of Hamina, just outside of Kotka.

thank you spook

I always love a happy ending, they really overcame the odds on that one.

Oh cool, I heard about this. If this happens, I won't just work for extra income, I'll have to work for needed income.
2017-11-10, 12:24 AM #5334
Wow. That's awful for the United States
2017-11-10, 12:33 AM #5335
But what about all of the jobs that will be created once the billionaires don’t have to pay taxes anymore? You could be a cabin boy on their second used yacht, or do minimum wage temporary work for the legitimate front of one of their schemes. Why would you want to waste your time inventing things when you could be pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.
2017-11-10, 12:39 AM #5336
This deal's getting worse all the time....

Edit: Speaking as an American who was sold the standard GOP propaganda. I'm not a grad student.
2017-11-10, 12:45 AM #5337
That's good. If you're gonna invent something, you should do it at a desk owned by a billionaire. That way they get 100% of the benefit of your invention. Because they own the desk where you invented it.
2017-11-10, 12:50 AM #5338
Instead of inventing, maybe what I should be doing is disrupting.

(Or do I need to be a capitalist to skirt the law for profit?)
2017-11-10, 12:53 AM #5339
Oh my god, do you even have to ask? Imagine if one of us tried to run a jitney cab ring, or facilitated pop up hotels. We’d get thirty years and they wouldn’t even talk about it on the news.
2017-11-10, 12:56 AM #5340
My last patent, after all of the management level dead weight was attached to it to appease the demon of office politics, I think I got a $1200 bonus and a USB memory stick. They got exclusive access to my invention for 20 years.

**** ain’t worth it. Never invent anything when you work anywhere. Keep your head down, keep your mouth shut, and if you decide you want to have a good idea you should quit your job before having it.
2017-11-10, 1:00 AM #5341
I'm sorry that happened to you. The other sad thing about that kind of thing is when the corporation owning the intellectual property decides not to use it for anything but lawsuit ammunition, or can't because they go bankrupt and sell it for a fraction of its worth to some rich guy who never releases it.

Looks like the Senate removed the bit about taxing tuition waivers, so thank ****.

I don't know in what universe *not* getting your income tax doubled or more to fund a tax break for the wealthy makes you a "winner", though.
2017-11-10, 8:28 AM #5344
i would have skipped an entire tax bracket had that gone through. sure, i totally make six figures and don't lose half my stipend to rent already!
I had a blog. It sucked.
2017-11-10, 10:27 AM #5345
Right now I'm skirting myself just below 37k to stay in the lower bracket. The original version would bump me up approximately to 6-7k in taxes. Basically I'd be boned.
2017-11-10, 10:36 AM #5346
Private university pays itself arbitrary amount of fictional money in grad student tuition subsidies, fully deducts the amount from their taxes as a tuition reimbursement related to employment. Government moves to close the loophole. Private universities band together and frame the issue as taxing grad students, instead of just not paying themselves fictional money in a tax evasion scheme anymore. It works perfectly.
2017-11-10, 10:42 AM #5347
It's okay, we just had a similar controversy in Canada over employee discounts, routinely abused by car dealerships, among others. The industry planted stories about how it would be an unfair tax on retail workers. It worked, despite the fact that nobody who works retail makes enough money to pay any income tax in Canada.

PR is super effective.

Sounds plausible to me.

The Republican tax proposal would repeal AMT? Whaaat?

Why doesn't Donald Trump just declare himself tax exempt?

RT will be registered as a Russian agent in America now. Which is a good step.

you mean i'm not getting $60k+ worth of benefits at this university, when I audit two classes a year and pay them rent to stay on campus?

Do you think they claim LIHTC on that?

Edit: Just checked the law. Yes, graduate and professional student housing qualifies for LIHTC. lmao. What a scam.
2017-11-10, 12:36 PM #5354
My stipend after tax is almost exactly twice my rent. 50% of my income (post tax) goes right back into the hands of this place so that I can live near enough to not need to rely on public transit. That might be the part that makes me angriest; they know how tight the budget for grad students is in this city, and still knowingly and happily take away half of that money under the guise of "It's cheaper than if you lived a block away in housing that we didn't provide."

EE stipends are on the upper end here, and got a sizable bump this year. Last year I was paying something like 60% of my stipend in rent (post tax)

Also good for comic relief. E.g., a thread on the front page sounds like it was written for the onion: "Ask HN: Is my career doomed if I don’t become an AI/ML Developer?"
