I'm not there, and I'm not French, so I honestly don't know what the protests are really about. But the fact that the commercial media is pushing the selfish anti-carbon tax narrative so hard makes me think it's not at all about that.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say that if the gas taxes are a significant part of this uprising at all, it's because the government is putting 100% of the carbon tax burden on individual drivers even though they account for less than 17% of emissions.

So, someone claiming to be one of the protesters wrote a post on reddit (take that with however many grains of salt you need). They said a big part of it is against special treatment of the wealthy, increasingly difficult lives under minimum incomes, lack of accountability for anyone in the government. Basically a litany of anti-neoliberal views, like Occupy Wall Street.

The tax is more of a straw-camel thing.

Another thing, the Macron government tried cutting taxes while encouraging French companies to use the new money to invest. They didn't invest so not many new jobs were created. So the French people see it as a gift to the wealthy.

Just found this, too, which seems like a reasonable narrative. Basically it's against the same trend of neoliberal privatization that's been going on for decades, you have the same trend of racist nationalists trying to co-opt what they can from it, etc.

The media is doing their role, too: pretending the narrative isn't reasonable, changing their message, not talking about it because they don't know how to reply or what to do about the fact people hate their governments. They'll probably blame Russia at some point, if they aren't already. It's a script we're familiar with.

Edit: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-09/pro-russia-social-media-aims-at-macron-as-yellow-vests-rage

Yup. It's amazing how a backwards country with a tiny economy is apparently capable of mind controlling millions of citizens worldwide. Didn't anyone tell you the overwhelming fear of Russian psyops is half of the intent of their psyops?

Why would they reinvest? Interest rates are low, there's tonnes of liquid cash looking for investment. The issue is that the US economy is expected to finally have a downturn next year, and worker protections in France make it extremely risky to hire new workers.

Maybe tethering survival to international capital markets was a bad thing for working class French people.

i.e. capitalism

If only there were some alternative to capitalism that incentivized reinvestment in the country where the owners live... ah well, we can always try racing to the bottom.

So the yellow vests have already gained minimum wage increases and tax reliefs for the lower classes.

I love how revolutionary principles just work. Of course the mainstream media will not speak of this loudly, because they definitely do not want this infecting other nations.

In fact, Spain proactively increased the minimum wage in response to France's protests. Lol. If only Americans were cool.

Pretty sure that if the US had a popular revolution you’d start nuking your own cities.

China just publicly admitted that they've detained two Canadians (in retaliation for our arrest of Huawei's CFO for extradition to the United States).

Hopefully western businesspeople are watching and learning an important lesson right now. If you don't want to get arrested on a whim and parted out like a car for party officials, just because your home country does something that a Chinese tyrant dislikes, maaaaaaaybe you shouldn't do business with China?
2018-12-13, 12:32 PM #12938
Hopefully also this article from the BMJ that just hit Hacker News won't also apply here... but hey, if we need to grease business transactions to get our iPhones made, so what if we tacitly sanction the actions of the RPC...

The US has a lot of prisoners, could always send them some in exchange for iphones. How many iphones do you think you could get for a lung?

I... know you were linking to the organ harvesting part, but I let the whole thing play. I know it wasn't your intention to share the whole thing, that there are probably better sci fi shows around, but that was some really weird ****, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

Edit: read in the youtube comments that people got Terry Gilliam vibes, Brazil in particular (with the cheesy 1984 aesthetic), and it had me feeling the same thing. But, nevertheless, I get a strong sense that this show is pretty pointless.

As far as I can tell, it’s basically a bio-horror/space horror spin on a VERY dry Star Trek TOS parody.

Hell yeah, French police. Remember, Louis the XVI was forced to admit he was no longer the absolute ruler of France when he couldn't depend on the army. Macron will be forced to really give into demands if he can't depend on the riot police.

These protests have given me a new admiration for France. I know American morons like the "surrender" memes, but Americans will hardly step two feet to protest. I guess, though, America would go nuclear if they did.

These results suggest that there are a large number of party loyalists in the United States, that their claims to being a self-defined conservative are suspect, and that group loyalty is the stronger motivator of opinion than are any ideological principles.

If we're going to be potentially rude but honest: this is basically Wookie. Wookie is Wookie not because he studied conservative views and preferred them to liberal ones. He's a conservative because he feels he's a conservative. He interprets everything as coming from a liberal baddie or from a conservative goodie. Any arguments exist as planks to shore up his identity.

lol, are you trying to troll him into coming back so that he can waste more time from his life in this black hole?

Also, I can't help but chuckle at the thought of Reid complaining about anyone (other than FGR) having a shtick.

I have decided that people in here adapting some FGRisms (e.g. making threads about changing forum structures OR having shticks or accusing others of having shticks OR actually making 2005-2008 era (i.e. Burgerboy Era) FGR-style points except in a more serious and probably-researched manner) is my true contribution and legacy to these forums*.
