Isn't assassinating an official military leader of a foreign country you're not at war with kind of not kosher?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Iran has been at war with us, though. So, yeah, I would say it is normally frowned upon but in cases like this you can't make a hard argument against it on that basis alone.

Iran started it when they nationalized their oil industry, 60 years of war cold and hot is a small price to pay for the inconvenience suffered by standard oil

I think we all need to take a moment and acknowledge how pathetic it was that Iran let 56 people be accidentally killed at a funeral.

After that, I think the US can pretty much just bow out and call it a win no matter what Iran does.
2020-01-07, 9:47 PM #15862
Well, we've got incoming missiles and troops deploying. I get that Iran felt they had to do something so as not to appear weak but I think they really messed up now. Trump might surprise with an incredibly restrained response but he may very well reign death on Iran. I believe this will be incredibly popular as well although I also believe Trump doesn't give a damn about that. What I don't know is how lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan will influence are war fighting tactics and policies.

So I wonder if it's just spin that Iran basically telegraphed their ineffective response to save face and not provoke a response. Regardless, looks like Trump chose restraint. I'm not surprised.

I, too, believe that the side that assassinated an important political and military leader for no reason chose restraint.

I get why so many people are saying it's a rat****, but if it is, it's not one meant to help Buttigieg, who could have really boosted his campaign with an unambiguous and instantaneously reported result of the sort he's likely to get, ranging anywhere from close second to an outright win. The real story, the one I'd want to keep out of the news if I were a centrist Democratic influence-peddler, is Biden's fourth-place finish, which on its own makes Sanders the front-runner.

Your first mistake is assuming that Bloomberg has a strategy, and isn't just another billionaire who is trying to buy a shiny thing.

Let the other candidates self-immolate in the first four states as they mercilessly attack each other. Biden drops out after getting creamed in the first four states, leaving nobody in the race except those extremist progressives Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and that pipsqueak Pete Buttigieg. Bloomberg steps in as the moderate alternative who can save the party from descending into socialism. He wins big on Super Tuesday, demonstrating his viability.

That's the strategy, I think.
