For all its flaws, Twitter makes it pretty easy to ignore garbage comments if you stick to reading the original tweets. I can't say that about ostensibly comparable sites providing real-time updates to developing events, like, say, /r/politics, for which it is impossible to gauge the credibility of any given post on the same time scale that it takes to judge the post of a trusted figure like Frum.
2017-05-11, 12:13 PM #2002
I take less issue with the tweet about the map, and I will concede that there is an argument for documenting/sharing it. I'm unsure that Twitter is the appropriate avenue, but that's not an argument I'm interested in having.

My main complaint was the anecdote from the diner (restaurant?), i.e. the original picture that I quoted.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I'm willing to bet Pence does it wilder and harder than Trump.

I didn't spend too much time thinking about the dinner thing, and I admit it is sort of fanciful to dwell on. Just another data point that the guy is a dick though.

But let's be honest here about why people like me bother to check in on this stuff (beyond coping): we're all holding our breath and waiting for one of the president's character flaws to get him into enough real trouble that it costs him his job. All these minor cock ups sort of paints a hopeful picture of that actually happening.

And by the way, this was from a much longer TIME magazine article about life in the oval office in the Trump era (well let's not get ahead of ourselves and call it an era yet, it's only lasted a few months so far)

Nope. From the paragraph before the passage I posted, in the full TIME article:

Quote:
the Blue Room has been lit with nearly a dozen votive candles, the table is set with yellow roses, and the Washington Monument is neatly framed in the South window.

Bill Clinton may have left behind another substance on the oval office carpet, but with Trump it's probably going to be thousand island dressing.

Which is rather fitting, since he is himself an orange stain on the country.

Going back to Uber for a second: also on HN today was Alan Kay's lecture at a "startup school" held at Stanford. It didn't take more than a minute before he took the chance to vent some pent up frustration and rip on the SV startup culture to which his audience of "entrepreneurs" belong:

... another Picasso quote: "learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist". And not doing this is probably the greatest sin of Silicon Valley since the 80's. Nobody has bothered becoming a pro in software (in particular in user interface design). So when they break the rules, they break them like a dumb child does, by throwing rocks through windows.

I never thought of putting together the idea of "disruption" and dumb children together (wait a minute, why didn't I?), but seeing that the dumb children we've been discussing ITT were the class of people among which the president belongs to, it sort of starts to make since.

But then we have to modify Paul Graham's definition of SV as rich people + nerds to simply SV = rich people + other (less dumb?) children.

SV = dumb, rich children + pre-proletarian craftsworkers

WE COULD HAVE BEEN CANADA
Was the American Revolution such a good idea?
By Adam Gopnik
The Revolution is the last bulwark of national myth, but in sanctifying it we forget that it was more horrific than heroic.
The Revolution is the last bulwark of national myth, but in sanctifying it we forget that it was more horrific than heroic.

And what if it was a mistake from the start? The Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, the creation of the United States of America—what if all this was a terrible idea, and what if the injustices and madness of American life since then have occurred not in spite of the virtues of the Founding Fathers but because of them? The Revolution, this argument might run, was a needless and brutal bit of slaveholders’ panic mixed with Enlightenment argle-bargle, producing a country that was always marked for violence and disruption and demagogy. Look north to Canada, or south to Australia, and you will see different possibilities of peaceful evolution away from Britain, toward sane and whole, more equitable and less sanguinary countries. No revolution, and slavery might have ended, as it did elsewhere in the British Empire, more peacefully and sooner. No “peculiar institution,” no hideous Civil War and appalling aftermath. Instead, an orderly development of the interior—less violent, and less inclined to celebrate the desperado over the peaceful peasant. We could have ended with a social-democratic commonwealth that stretched from north to south, a near-continent-wide Canada.

Replacing press briefings with equal access press releases would be an unironically great thing. It would destroy the current system of access patronage, forcing media companies to actually compete on their merits instead of coasting on rents.

So it looks like the president is trying to blackmail against "leaking to the media" the man he fired for investigating his crimes.

Can somebody remind me what the next step the mafia playbook says about how to handle snitches?

This is super funny.

For real though. Morgan Lewis is a huge international full-service law firm with offices in 12 countries. They probably are the best lawyers in Moscow. They're probably also the best lawyers in Kazakhstan, and a lot of other places.

"Someone" at the WH was upset that WaPo published a story claiming Sean Spicer was hiding "in the bushes", saying it was more accurate to describe him as hiding "among the bushes".
2017-05-12, 12:44 PM #2035
Someone should tell him that "hiding in the bushes" means you are being hidden by some bushes. It doesn't mean you are literally standing inside of a bush.

Unless the implication is that he's being protected by the Bush family.
