I'm not. I'm having a lot of fun pointing out the political science word salad you use to describe the people you disagree with. I can't wait until you throw Marxism into the mix too.

No, I'm pretty careful how I use the word conservative.

Oh look I've hit a nerve. Guess who's actually sensitive about the fact that he doesn't understand anything about politics or economics?

It's like Bill O'Reily's word of the day every day. How could I not know what it means?

I'm not the one that started calling the calling these rising Democrat stars Democratic Socialists and you have no idea of my friend's beliefs or whether or not my pithy description is accurate.

Lol, you can't possibly believe that do you? I mean, I'm not going to say that you can't rile me with an offensive remark but to think that you can make me feel sensitive about my lack of understanding. I mean wouldn't that require me to at least acknowledge to myself my lack of understanding? I think we all know I'm not capable of that level of introspection.

"This statement is false."

I wonder if it's also impossible for those who can't see the world from any but their own viewpoint to understand logical contradictions and other self-referential constructions.

Either way, I think I now understand why sarcasm becomes such an important tool for deflection, since it basically lets you repeat back pairs of ideas whose juxtaposition ought to give you pause, but without actually needing to understanding why.

Glad I could be of assistance.

Well it sure ain't "consent"

You'd call 'em socialist anyway. But alright, I'll bite: please explain in your own words why they are or are not socialists.

It's a safe assumption.

Maybe you're right, you're obviously unphazed by this discussion.

I think I understand as well why trolling works for those on the right: conservative logic, in the limit, is arbitrarily concise, whereas other forms of logic diverge to be longer and longer (because you have to check all the cases, rather than presuming the answer from the start).

So it's just a game to get non-conservatives to type out more stuff, and then make them even angrier by letting them know how they wasted all that time typing it out by changing the subject.
2018-10-26, 12:47 PM #12451
And whatever suffering the conservative must endure as he is berated becomes justified by enjoyment of seeing the anger he elicits when he effortlessly pretends not to understand. (Note that pretending not to understand probably often coincides with being actually incapable of understanding, which incidentally makes it convenient for morons to pretend to be trolling in order to protect their ego.)

I don't feel compelled to do so but why would you even want me to? I'm pretty sure I don't have a record here of maligning people by calling them socialists.

Isn't that all you do?

I mean, you might not always use the word, but does it make a difference? Earlier this year or the last (in the school shooting thread) you said something about terrorists usually being some kind of insane left-wing radical. In fact iirc it was pretty much the exact same thing you are arguing now. For some reason you seem to be vested in proving that terrorism is mostly a left-wing phenomenon. Why is that?

So basically there's this business communication hack. You can usually tell how much someone cares about something based on how much time they spend writing it. So if someone sends you a one sentence e-mail, even if it's a complicated subject it's usually okay to respond in a couple of words. But if someone sends you pages of stuff, even if your answer is a simple "yes" or "no" it's always best to provide a much longer response than you might feel necessary. It's kind of a way of showing that you respect the person, and that you're as invested in your response being worthwhile as the recipient was in voicing their question/concern.

I deliberately invert it.

Why is it that you associate left-wing radicals with socialists?

mmhmm. My problem with socialism at the federal level is it is inconsistent with our form of government. I'm totally fine with it being implemented at lower levels and consistent with relevant constitutions or at higher levels with proper amendments.

Yeah, nothing you said made any sense.

How about this: I would oppose the United States becoming socialist even if it would mean my quality of life would increase. Still no?

I'd go further. You'd oppose it if it unequivocally made life better for almost everybody for all generations, except the very small number of undeserving, ultra-rich people, whose welfare you have been tricked into identifying with the preservation of some noble sounding ideals about government.
2018-10-26, 1:15 PM #12463
No, that doesn't work. You're wrong there. Try again.

That technically makes sense, but it's not a meaningful preference because you don't know what socialism is.

Everybody on Earth since time immemorial has tried this line of reasoning. "I'm not arguing for ends, I'm arguing for principles!" It's the common cry of people who have a gap in their justifications, so they try to make the gap sacred.

Why don't you just tell us why you still wouldn't support a shift in government, even if it caused an increase of QoL for the majority of people? Misguided idealism and romanticism would have been my first guess too.

I'm genuinely curious.

He's given his reasons here before. It's because he prefers to draw conclusions about the negative aspects of wasteful bureaucracies from his own personal experience as a government worker and not on those who have worked in privately owned but equally bloated organizations. Basically he doesn't like that either one can be wasteful in principle, but he doesn't acknowledge the second kind, because it would require that he obtain an education to appreciate that it might actually exist (and he doesn't believe it is possible to legitimately obtain knowledge without actually experiencing it first hand, which means that people who went to university were actually just brainwashed). But since he's not in a position to easily do that, he pretends he did it on purpose, and doubles down to say that government waste is worse than corporate waste.

That's why he hates big government. It has nothing to do with socialism.

Who would have known the effectiveness of founding a political ideology based on passive-aggressive ignorance ("obstructionism").

Conservativism is literally the OJ Simpson of political ideologies.

The other one of course being Bill Cosby. Man, conservatives really loved that guy. Actually, besides the fact that he's black AND a rapist, I'm not sure why they ever stopped, given how much they seem to like white rapists.

Do any of you really think this bothers me? And what's this obsession with whether or not I actually know what socialism is? I could just do like the rest of you and invent an offensive description of it that you disagree with.
