It's a big dumb stereotype, but as with most stereotypes, there's basis in reality. Most people I've seen at gun shows look like normal, ordinary people. In fact, most gun owners dislike the stupid, hyper-masculine military wannabe types. They call them "tacticool" or "mall ninjas" and are not representative of the whole.

And anyway, the AR15 and it's variants are by no means a big tough guy gun. Your 200 year old shotgun is way more difficult to shoot and control than a fancy modern "assault weapon." Your grandpa's old crappy hunting rifle kicks harder and weighs more.

No, not guns. Just men.

That's one of those fancy fully semi automatic assault rifles.

I wasn't even talking about guns, I was responding to your commentary on the ad, and, ultimately, agreeing with your underlying idea about it: it promotes guns as an ED pill for hyper masculine alpha bros. :eng101:

Today’s episode of “advertising doesn’t work the way you think it does” is brought to you by Doritos. Enjoy the great taste of Doritos. Literally only for base jumpersTM.

Did you just draw 9/11 in emoji's?

Edit: Wait, it wasn't until 2002 that GWB choked on that pretzel...

Funny, all of these did show up on desktop but not on mobile.

That's because the font in your phone is missing more Unicode characters than your desktop browser / OS is.

Senator Palin? I think it would be a good move for her.

Yeah, but emojis were created for phones, so it just seems weird that the fonts would be more limited than desktop. Especially since there's no default and convenient way to type emojis on desktop.

Hell, why not? Can’t make the US senate any worse.
2018-10-05, 6:44 PM #11780
I posted recently but not often enough that I think the senate should be returned to the states or abolished. That opinion aside, I remember ten years ago that she was more "qualified" than the three men on the ticket for executive office. Both she and her opposition has managed to trash her image. If she is elected to the senate she would have an opportunity to confirm that perspective or change it.

I agree, this is kinda strange. I hate smartphones anyway.

Also, Palin is more than intelligent enough to be a senator, but still can't become one without first becoming a citizen.

I hate everything about the implementation, but the technology itself is the best thing silicon valley ever did. It's pretty amazing how much information is available now.

Ever end up in Norfolk alone on a surprise? Being able to find a hotel in minutes is nice.

You might want to rethink that...

True, I guess most of the actual tech was funded by the state and developed in universities.

I want a refund on Silicon Valley.

Well I'm just saying. Given all the other stuff that has been coming out of the valley since the `50s, I think it's a bit silly to say that the damn iPhone is better than the rest of it. For starters, what about the original Macintosh? Or I could list literally a million other things.

Maybe I could say "it's the sum total of the best technology we have for everyday application" or something like that. The Macintosh is useless today.

Kind of ironic that the one thread where you can talk about anything doesn't have the word "anything" in the title.

Actually, it was a hell of a lot more powerful than the iPhone. But I understand, you are thinking of personal computing as a consumer device like a television, camera, or magazine and not a tool like a library or typewriter.

i.e., what you are pointing out is that the Macintosh is an inferior appliance, meant for consumers (not content creators or researchers).

I'd take having access to the MacTutor History of Mathematics any day of the week (created on a Mac: "The Mathematical MacTutor system consists of more than 100 HyperCard stacks amounting to about 18 Mb and about 2000 cards"), over, oh, I dunno, the complete dumbing down mobilification of the entire web, shoehorning every page into a single-page design with an oversized video landing page and no navbar so that it looks pretty on an iPhone.

Oh, I know correlation isn't causation and all that: the web isn't necessarily dumber because of iPhones, it could just be dumber people who use the web in the age of iPhones.
2018-10-06, 9:25 AM #11792
Not to mention the fact that people who absolutely must browse Google search results for the latest social media on the subway are ushering in the further takeover of the web by a monopoly.

Here's an idea: maybe forever static thread titles are a braindead idea anyway? Wookie is certainly old enough to have used mailing lists and newsgroups based on the email paradigm of discussion, where changing the subject heading but keeping the quoted messages being replied to is utterly trivial.
2018-10-06, 9:42 AM #11794
Here's another great idea of Usenet that vBullitain manager to half-assedly port: the killfile. I even have a oneliner greasemonkey script (search the board for Stanley Kooblocker) that removes all traces of messages by specific users.

I touched on this in another thread but we've been using the internet for over twenty years now. I have never been more lost on webpages than I am now. I'm looking at a page for a piece of software and, while the page is pretty, I can't even find a download link.

Adblock has helped this for me. There was an era of ads with fake download buttons that drove me crazy, until computing power and freeware caught up to block ads altogether.
2018-10-06, 10:00 AM #11799
Yeah, fake download links are annoying and God forbid you're trying to find a torrent of something. At least then I understand all the deception and lies but when you're trying to download something legitimate it's pretty annoying. In my case I was looking for Radeon ReLive but I guess it's an option in the driver software installation but they don't really tell you that until you get to the right support page.

That's a key reason why some corners of the left are better attuned to reality than liberals are, imo.

Can we just stop for a minute and appreciate how incredibly out of touch politicians are, that an angry senile old man is considered by a plurality of voters to be a breath fresh air? We have 310,000,000 citizens and produce most of the world's AAA cinema. We have manipulating people's feeling down to a science, whether it be for television or to sell them things. How the hell are our politicians and campaign strategists so incredibly worthless? Jeb Bush has to slink out of the primaries with a messily 3% of the vote despite spending 130 million and getting backed by the GOP establishment.
