We’ve been talking a little recently about “decline” at the NYT and this is a pretty fascinating tweet. Subscription cancellations are used in intramural battles at the paper over the direction the paper should take.

Hot take: In practice, the only difference between a newspaper and a tabloid is the educational attainment of their target demographic.

It’s not a huge revelation, I suppose, but this tweet does confirm (and not just support, but really confirm) something I’ve suspected for a little while, which is that there really is a rift amongst employees at the Times about how to cover the news.

There have been a few leaks of meetings at the Times lately, for example:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/08/new-york-times-meeting-transcript.amp

And I’ve always wondered, what was the leaker trying to accomplish by leaking such information? What was their interest? Their goal? The Sarah Jeong really does highlight that there’s clearly something behind the question.

Kind of interesting. They want to be careful about using the word racist, which is fine. But then they kind of spell out the problem:

Quote:
“How do we grapple with all the stuff you all are talking about? How do we write about race in a thoughtful way, something we haven’t done in a large way in a long time?”

It's as if they're on the precipice of realizing modern liberalism isn't sufficient to answer these questions. I was thinking about fertility rates recently, and how most western nations are below replacement rate. What is even the liberal response to that? More immigration is really their answer. But no attention is ever paid to the question of 'why don't white people, especially the non-religious lunatics, get married or have kids anymore?' Because that raises hard questions about the society we've created.

So when the white nationalists walk in and talk about Muslims taking over, the liberals can't really reply with anything other than "I like Islam!" So what can the writers at TNYT even say? They're at the limit of their explanatory power.

did Sarah Jeong get fired because

A.) She in fewer words posted a challenge to twitter that if you don't like the editorial direction of NYT, you should cancel your subscription.

B.) Lots and lots of people are cancelling their subscriptions right now, and NYT took it as a signal to fix their editorial department.

C.) All of the above.

D.) None of the above.

E.) All of the above.

F.) Bush did 9/11

Way more attention is paid to the question of "why don't white people have more kids", almost none is paid to the question of "why is population growth necessary for our nations to function, to the point that if white people won't provide the population growth they'll buy it overseas"

Edit: skilled immigrants are both cheaper to acquire and higher-productivity than the domestic alternative, so if any nation has to allocate finite resources to either pursuing skilled immigration or domestic growth, they will always choose to allocate everything towards immigration and nothing towards domestic growth. So despite my attempt at rhetoric it's not actually a hard decision for nations. As long as other countries have adequate educational systems, nations and their business interests don't have any particular reason to want white people to have kids, and a few strong reasons to prefer that they didn't.

So I guess I've accidentally paid even more attention to question #1 at the expense of question #2.

Always fun to take a trip down the rabbit hole of failing American cities and businesses. My favorite line: "Kmart feels old, tired, and depressing".

(Can you tell I like Tarkovsky films?)
2019-09-28, 8:46 AM #15535
It actually seems like Kmart is completely rudderless and is driving into oblivion, as in they're just liquidating locations each year to finance the debt from ordinary operations. There doesn't seem to be any strategy.. I guess corporate just wants to stay dry for a few minutes before the waves smashing the ship into the rocks force them off? I really don't know why they don't just liquidate all stores and pay back money to the shareholders.

Turns out the Vox policy podcast had a pretty informative discussion on this issue this week. Good for getting a sense of the liberal perspective on the issue.

It’s pretty wild how liberal policies like universal pre-K or child rearing assistance still are forms of government support to help parents raise children. But then you realize... what, that most of those policies are designed to enable women to work more hours?

It seems like there’s a “socialist” and a liberal way of potentially explaining the value of a policy like paid maternal leave. On the socialist side, child rearing typically involves uncompensated labor, so paid leave is a way of compensating that labor. But then on the liberal side, I wonder if you don’t have paid maternal leave, if women who are financially able to drop out of the workforce?

One myth that gets busted: people often say that birth rates are down because more people are going to college, sometimes grad school, and which delays life cycle stuff a few years, because people are generally making responsible decisions. Turns out, that’s not really true: amongst people who go to college, there isn’t really a change in fertility rates. Most of the change is accounted for by working class people, who don’t go to college and make up a much large part of the population.

Damn wild I was actually pretty close. Turns out if you have paid leave you’re more likely to return to work than if you don’t. So... another example of a liberal policy that has the effect of keeping people in the work force.

If you hate working so much, why don’t you just collect rents like most of the unemployed people

The social liberal/social democrat policies are only mostly designed to make it easier to work (and therefore recognize the “value” of work/employers as social institutions). Another important part is that it converts unpaid/hidden child rearing labor to work accounted by GDP, and theoretically delivering it more efficiently because its done by professionals working at scale. But be reaaaal careful pointing this kind of stuff out in certain crowds, because the kinds of people who think they believe in the value of hard work also generally believe this a well meaning policy set rather than a scheme to rob mothers of their time.

It’s one of those beautiful cases where conservatives and socialists both hate this **** for a whole bunch of different and mutually intelligible reasons, so you know **** ain’t right.

IIRC, RE: the first paragraph, this is pretty close to the argument Elizabeth Warren makes in her book from the early 2000s, the Two Income Trap.

RE: the second paragraph, Tucker Carlson has talked about the book and has expressed sympathies with its arguments on his show so... mhmmm.

So what I would have posted this time last week is that I had done some cursory looking in to the issue and planned to download a couple relevant documents but I didn't get around to posting or downloading mostly due to lifestyle changes that simply have my time and energy focused much differently (and far better) than probably ever. Of course a week later with most of this being pretty obviously discredited there's not much point in addressing it other than to say that even though my gut told me one thing I tend to hold people's opinions here in pretty high regard so I thought I should at least look into it. It's disappointing to see that some people here still either fall so hard for the misinformation or willingly participate in spreading it.

On another topic I wonder if I can get some thoughts on the linked article below. I'm not posting this to spread this information. I don't think I even finished it. I don't really care about the credibility of the site or person. I'm not being "red pilled" or trying to do so to anyone. The background on how I found this link is a person I've referred to here before emailed it to me in a mass email. I actually have emails from him that do not have my email address in the "To" field set to go straight to the trash. Every once in a while I look in the trash to see if he's still sending stuff when I haven't heard from him and this one caught my eye because of "Sharia Law". I was fairly repulsed by the content but I really don't know anything about the topic.

Also, nobody knows what you’re talking about in your first paragraph. It’s not reasonable to expect anybody to keep track of all of the times you pretend you want to investigate something, don’t bother, and then form a strong Republican Party line opinion about it anyway.

I looked into it enough to come to the conclusion that even if I were to suspect the absolute worst version of events there doesn't seem to be anymore evidence than any of the other things democrats have complained about. It's time for them to moveon.org.

Well, I hate to use Trumpian rhetoric but I've begun to wonder if Trump isn't really trying to "drain the swamp". The other day I was thinking that it is disappointing that we don't hear much of investigations or charges of corrupt government officials but it I think this could be an example of Trump trying to root some out. The Ukraine seems to have discredited the notion there was any feeling of threats or pressure, and the language I've heard sounds pretty much like how Trump always talks anyway, and the leaker report seems to have been written with, at the very least, the assistance of democrat attorneys. It also seems laughable to me that getting to the bottom of Biden's corrupt Ukraine dealings would have much to do with Trump wanting to dig up dirt for the campaign. Biden's faculties really seem to be eroding quickly and implosion seems imminent anyway.
