This is pretty funny.
2018-09-12, 8:30 PM #11082
Billionaires finance campaigns and promise high paid do-nothing jobs and it’s free speech, private citizens collect a million dollars in small donations and it’s a bribe. Just another principled Republican.
2018-09-12, 8:40 PM #11083
The most outrageous part is that the very senators who are decrying this are the ones who helped make this kind of thing legal in the first place:

Quote:
Now we can argue about whether the political threat to Collins funded by tens of thousands of small donations should be illegal. But claims by Mitchell and others that the fundraising effort is illegal are wrong, in part thanks to the deregulated campaign finance system that Mitchell and others have helped to create through litigation and a sympathetic Supreme Court.

The whole "rule of law" shtick conservatives are always on about is wearing a little thin by now!
2018-09-12, 9:19 PM #11084
Well, at least it's a good thing Republican voters have principles. I'm sure they'll punish Collins for her libelous attack against Americans exercising their first amendment rights.
2018-09-12, 9:29 PM #11085
(As soon as Rush Limbaugh, et al. kindly let them know that's what they need to do.)
2018-09-12, 9:34 PM #11086
Oh I dunno, I can't imagine a Republican listening to a multiple divorced drug addict and trafficker.
2018-09-12, 10:12 PM #11087
I know all I need to know about Ann Coulter, but as someone who doesn't mind soccer at all, that column is pretty great.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

So you don't see a problem with essentially promising anti-donations in exchange for voting a certain way on a confirmation hearing?

Oh, okay, so it's all good then?

That's probably a question for Mitchell, McConnell, et al.

I didn’t say it was good, I said it was normal. If you don’t like your country being ruled by money and threats, build a better one next time.
2018-09-13, 3:02 PM #11093
Actually, we did build a better one.

It's already been torn down.

Then let's make it great again!

About a month ago in downtown Mountain View, I remember seeing that there was this old guy standing in the middle of the intersection on El Camino. He had this red helmet on with MAGA printed on it, and was speaking to the drivers through a megaphone, that we can "all Make America Great Again in our own way, and that we can take the phrase to mean whatever we choose".

Probably the most collected insane guy I've ever seen.

One morning, Hillsdale Caltrain station, there was a guy with a bullhorn who was running for US Senate on a platform of throwing Chinese Americans into death camps.

I wonder how hard you have to try not to learn stuff to live in the world Wookie lives in.
2018-09-14, 9:21 PM #11106
We live in the same world. You can choose to learn stuff too, if you want.

What books do you recommend I read?
2018-09-14, 9:34 PM #11109
Start with the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

pithy, but vacuous.

I don't think so. I wonder what it is that leftists oppose so much in these documents.

If you were serious you'd suggest some important rulings, or at least the Federalist Papers - anything to put the constitution and the bill of rights in the originalist context you claim to believe. Otherwise Reid is left to interpret the declaration of independence and constitution in a vacuum. The latter, at least, clearly isn't interpreted the same way by all readers.
2018-09-14, 9:44 PM #11113
Unless you believe the constitution should be accepted literally, as written. In which case, I'd remind you that isn't how the legal system of America works, neither before nor after the revolution. I recommend moving to a country you might prefer more, like France.

Okay, what is it that leftists oppose, and why are the things they oppose good?

Thing like "interpretation" and "pointing out the obvious difficulties with knowing exactly what people thought hundreds of years ago" are postmodern communist doctrine.

It's definitely interesting that someone posts here who thinks the Constitution and Declaration of Independence imply his particular world view. FWIW I have read both documents, so I have no idea what the blazes he's talking about.
